Numbers do get converted to integers whenever you use a bitwise operator, but conversions are relatively expensive, and you want the compiler to generate code that keeps the values as 32-bit integers (e.g. in integer registers).

Now the compiler has to allow for the possibility of BigInt, but I think "| 0" excludes that, because both operands need to be BigInt.

Yes, the "use asm" annotation is obsolete, but the basic idea of making 32-bit integer values and operations in the code unambiguous (e.g. with | 0) should still work.

The tricks come from the asm.js spec, but the V8 compiler has evolved a lot since then, so some things *might* no longer be necessary.

Math.imul() and >>> should work, I think. And the usual tricks to convince the JIT compiler to optimize it as integer operations. (And use a counter (with any odd number as an increment) to convert a hash function into a random number generator.)

We'll probably get that one instead then.
