why does this read like a Steam store description?

If I don’t buy the illusion why should the players?

I guess it’s also how engines work. I try to think of the elements of a game as whatever they represent/are/become instead of what they’re made of. So it’s a crocodile with a shotgun and not some art and audio and code.

I guess my use of the word gameplay is also subjective haha

we’ve traditionally tried to separate them and teach them separately and I think that’s not conductive at all to making cool games

sorry for the threads btw. I think for me, I stopped looking at these things as separate components. they’re all blending into eachother. the bits with and without gameplay, the sensorial parts (audio graphics etc) can not truly be taken separately from everything else. it ends up in one brain

why is that not the game though??? are you trying to cut non-interactive parts out of this definition?

to me I guess this ultimately a useless view because the player is gonna only see their own linear path. you look at the consequences of the rules and game in the possibility space to create gameplays you like but in the end it’s not something you can work on directly or the player experiences
