FF7 Remake is fun game. Great gameplay. Fun characters. Adds so much to the FF7 world. But marred by it's glazing of the original and tying it into the canon but still trying to do it's own thing. It adds too much in places and but just enough in others. Good game but flawed. I will play Rebirth.

Original FF7 is a legendary game. It pioneered so many things in games today. It is also dumb, goofy and silly in many places and I'm glad Remake kept a lot of the charm while bringing in many new ideas. That said adding these mystical elements of ghosts and destiny just drags it down for me.

It's just at odds with this Nomura writing and dialogue right out of 2000's. So many moments I said out loud what the character was going to say next cause it all felt so basic. Shaking your head when someone asks you a question isn't an answer, it's hacky anime way of saying nothing to be mystical.

All the moments I enjoyed were what was added between characters. I loved the gang. Tifa's motherly attitude and a badass Monk, Barret's love of Mother Earth and he's lame and goofy, Aerith constantly bullying Cloud and being a beast of a Mage. Red XIII is there too. These characters are fun.

You can also clearly tell the difference between Old Design of enemies and New Design. The updated old designs look great but still keep the spirit in tack. The New enemies are all awful generic energy monster designs. Felt like I was fighting 2010's Sonic enemies. Just bad. Second last boss sucks.

The last few encounters felt like I got punished for playing anyone but Cloud or using melee at all. I just starting looking up strats and weaknesses on the last few bosses cause using Assess just got me the "No Weaknesses figure it out yourself". Then why should I even bother using Assess?

Overwhelming a boss with ability combos with Materia feels great. Using weaknesses and exploits is fun. What isn't fun is when the boss leaves the arena to do an unblockable attack or forces you to use the ranged characters or my favorite phase changes when your just about to fill the stagger meter.
