⚒️ 🧪 Satellite and seismic data begin to reveal a picture of the fault that slipped in Japan: together, this earthquake and the M7.0 earthquake in 2016 fit together like puzzle pieces. earthquakeinsights.substack.com/p/update-on-...

⚒️ 🧪 A M6.8 earthquake struck Kyushu, Japan today. Large quakes in Japan are common and often pass without much notice, but this one is serious - instead of occurring offshore in the subduction zone, it is a shallow, strike-slip event near Kumamoto. Damage and deaths have already been reported.
⚒️ 🧪 A M5.5 earthquake struck central Peru today, killing at least 6. What made this event so damaging? earthquakeinsights.substack.com/p/deadly-m55...
⚒️ 🧪 A M7.3 earthquake struck offshore Mexico today, in the busy Middle America subduction zone. USGS PAGER estimates strong shaking along the coast, but the news reports little to no damage - why? We speculate. earthquakeinsights.substack.com/p/m73-earthq...
⚒️ 🧪 One week has passed since the M7.5 earthquake in Venezuela. FUNVISIS has detected >600 aftershocks so far, concentrated in the east, near Caracas. New satellite imagery shows >3 meters of likely surface offset in the same area - perhaps explaining the aftershocks, and contributing to damage.
Join me at 2 PM EST live - I’ll be chatting with Shawn Willsey at Geology Explained about the Venezuela earthquake. Come with questions! www.youtube.com/watch?v=j3AF...
⚒️ 🧪 Should the Venezuela earthquake(s) be considered one event or two? We asked the USGS how they made their decision. Also: a look at their preliminary slip model. earthquakeinsights.substack.com/p/venezuela-...
What have we learned about the deadly Venezuela earthquake in the last day and a half? A lot, actually. earthquakeinsights.substack.com/p/early-scie...
⚒️ 🧪 A catastrophic earthquake just struck northern Venezuela. Large buildings have collapsed, and the USGS PAGER is forecasting thousands of fatalities. Our colleague in Caracas, Dr. Frank Audemard, has shared with us what the earthquake felt like and footage from the region. Here’s what we know.
The latest USGS shakemap shows an earthquake that starts in the west and ruptures eastward, towards Caracas.

⚒️ 🧪A M5.6 earthquake struck northern California this morning, with very strong shaking near the epicenter and some injuries. The quake occurred on the Maacama fault: one of the San Andreas’ “sisters”. This is the largest Maacama earthquake on record, although larger quakes will happen eventually.
⚒️ 🧪 A M6.3 earthquake struck China yesterday, in the northern Tibetan Plateau. The USGS PAGER estimates that a lone town of 8,000 people right near the epicenter experienced severe shaking. News reports indicate that at least one person died. What do we know about these faults and why they exist?
⚒️ 🧪 A M6.7 earthquake struck Sulawesi, Indonesia today; news agencies report damage but the scale is still uncertain. This area has a history of damaging earthquakes (see: the 2018 M7.5 earthquake/tsunami/landslides), and complex tectonics. What do we know about how this event fits in?
⚒️ 🧪 A M6.1 earthquake struck northwest of Cuba today - the largest earthquake on record for the Gulf of Mexico. Why did this unusual earthquake occur? Our search for an answer takes us through 200 million years of geological history. earthquakeinsights.substack.com/p/m61-earthq...
⚒️ 🧪 A M7.8 earthquake occurred beneath the southern Philippines today; the USGS estimates that 1 million people experienced severe shaking; footage shows collapsed buildings. The earthquake occurred within the east-dipping subducting plate that underlies the island.
⚒️ 🧪 A M6.2 earthquake below southern Italy is a reminder of the subduction zone lurking beneath the Tyrrhenian Sea. At 250 km depth, this is not one of Italy’s dangerous earthquakes. But it did lead us to a *totally normal* conceptual model for the wildly complicated tectonics of the Mediterranean!
⚒️ 🧪 A M6 earthquake just struck the island of Hawaii. Although Hawaii is primarily volcanic, there is a record of surprisingly large earthquakes here, too — up to M7.9. Why do these occur, and how does this latest M6.0 fit in? earthquakeinsights.substack.com/p/m6-earthqu...
A swarm of small earthquakes has been rattling Brawley, California, with more than 300 events recorded so far. What’s going on and what should we expect? earthquakeinsights.substack.com/p/earthquake... ⚒️ 🧪
⚒️ 🧪 A M7.4 earthquake offshore northern Japan today led to a megaquake advisory: a warning that the risk of a M8+ earthquake is ten times higher than usual. What does that mean, and how does this event fit into the mosaic of earthquakes in this seismically active region?
A M5.7 earthquake occurred in west-central Nevada yesterday evening - close to a very similar earthquake about one year earlier. Can we tell what faults they occurred on, and were they related? earthquakeinsights.substack.com/p/m57-earthq... ⚒️ 🧪
