Agree there’s nothing wrong with stating counterfactuals given arbitrarily fixed antecedent params. However, they’re only policy-relevant if those params are realistic. And i.a. the chair and secretary have neither much scientific background nor any apparent inclination to acquire it.

What is the virological argument that Johnson’s policy was Pareto-optimal w.r.t. Covid deaths and harm to children kept out of school? Unless the virology is very weird indeed, fairly elementary applied mathematics/epidemiology does the trick.

Johnson’s cavalier incompetence is suggestive that in fact there was scope to impose a different pattern of lockdowns that would have been in the interests both of those particularly vulnerable to Covid and children who couldn’t go to school.
