He/him. Mammalian paleontology PhD candidate on hiatus. On Kumeyaay lands. This summer I work as a biology instructor and a mitigation paleontologist. The Zionist entity's settler colonial occupation of Palestine is illegal, unethical, and immoral.

I have been procrastinating on working on materials for class by figuring out how much I should be contributing to my IRA and therefore yeah I'm an adult, I'm middle aged, it has happened to me.

One of the all-time best species names. "Well they've got a big head, so, let's just say their head is big" no notes, thats 100% correct and accurate

It's Fossil Friday! Meet Eryops megacephalus. This critter, which lived some 280 million years ago during the Early Permian, was among the most terrestrial of the early tetrapods. Spot it in the Hall of Vertebrate Origins! Plan your visit: amnh.link/4bnMbG3 Photo: © AMNH

1 Matt Y posts here _and_ on Twitter but he chooses to post his weirdest takes on Twitter, wonder why that is 2 why is it that he thinks telling highly engaged, educated, younger progressives that they can have political success a bad thing? Isn't instilling hope into young voters/activists good?

It is possible to do two things at once; it is possible to make personal decisions that decrease your carbon footprint _and_ that makes you more likely to fight for larger-than-personal policies for carbon withdrawal.

Dana R. Fisher (aka the Apocalyptic Optimist)

Important new study out at Nature Climate Action showing that individual climate actions do not stop people from participating in collective climate action. Instead, they were associated with greater collective engagement and somewhat stronger policy support. www.nature.com/articles/s44...

Cretaceous clams of impressive size

Daniel Álvarez

The biggest clam I ever saw. Around -or even more- than 1 metre wide. This 85-million-year-old giant clam from Kansas was so massive that small fish used it as shelter—and some were even fossilized inside. #Fossils #Paleontology #Kansas #Cretaceous

Thread on historical paleontologists who have good politics

Natalia (娜塔莉)

I did a thread on paleontologists contributing to eugenics & fascism. What about the opposite end of political spectrum?🧵 Ernst Untermann (1864–1956) palaeontologist by trade, painted murals for the Dinosaur National Monument. A prolific socialist, first in US to translate Das Kapital into English.

I know I'm in a bubble because I have never talked to anyone who was enthusiastic about Pete Buttigieg. Like I'm sure that such people exist (and ... Good for them?) but y'all are in a different part of The American Left than me

Newly published whale taxonomy paper

My Bachelor's thesis has been published! We examined the problematic taxonomy of Zygorhiza kochii and Dorudon serratus, with implications for the wider taxonomy of the basilosauridae. A small thread:

Democratic candidates who won't support trans people do not deserve support.

Erin Reed

1. In major news, the Ohio Dem Party has banned the Progressive Caucus from criticizing candidate for Gov. Amy Acton's transphobia. It has now applied more pressure to quiet criticism of anti-trans politics than it has on its own nominee to stop embracing them. Subscribe to support our journalism.

Good photosynthesis thread

c0nc0rdance

I love trees, but let's be honest, they're the 'B-team' of photosynthesis. A junior varsity squad. This video from NASA's Earth Observatory shows the real stars of the show: phytoplankton. This is chlorophyll concentration (in mg/m^3) by month since 2003. Notice anything surprising? (📷: NASA)

I don't have a lot of nice things to say because Lindsey backtracked on almost any good political position he had. He was in favor of bipartisan climate change legislation in October of 2009, until he decided that his constituents no longer cared, so he stopped caring. Terrible political figure.

In a new #Viewpoint we argue that the binary definition of #BiologicalSex based on gamete size is a scientifically robust framework that is entirely compatible with the diversity of sexual phenotypes and human gender identities. onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/...

"stay in character" implies that somehow there is something inauthentic about Count Binface?!?! He's obviously a nobleman of House Binface.

YouGov

If Count Binface won the Clacton by-election, do Britons think he should stay in character as an MP, or take the role seriously? Should primarily stay in character: 26% Should primarily take the role seriously: 48% yougov.com/en-gb/daily-...
