There's also a phenomenon in BJJ of guys quitting after getting their blue belt (the first belt-level promotion), and it's usually guys like this, because once they are promoted and the upper belts who (by training and convention) roll light with the white belts start going a bit harder.

The unfortunate reality is that these guys at the white belt level become bullies, beating up on the white belts who are less experienced than them, or on smaller students. It's part of the reason that healthy BJJ environments have "enforcers" (a term I dislike) to basically calm these dudes down.

There's an old joke about the giant Polynesian guys (I think it's a Taika Waititi joke) about how these 300lb club bouncers are the nicest, sweetest guys and talk softly. I have largely found this to be true, and cite former K-1 champion Mark Hunt as a prime example.

There are weird distinctions here around race and gender, as well as class and education where college accessibility for some white middle-class kids is tied to amateur sports in a Varsity Blues way, but for poor kids in a much bleaker, exploitative way.

There is absolutely a white suburban varietal of “serious amateur” sports that’s distinct and destructive, and is distinguished from the amateur infrastructure in poor (often urban, Black and Latino communities) in ways that create real splits in “taking sports seriously.”
