It cannot be understated just how awful academic journals login portals and systems are. Even with password managers, it’s unbearably and unnecessarily complicated. You think with the ungodly margins that they would want to make it easier for people to give them free labor. But alas.

I’m traveling so I had to wake up at 2am to catch this game and wow did the USMNT deliver. Now the trick is to get back to sleep…
Jason AndersonThe USMNT has won a third game at a World Cup, a thing they have never done before

One of the most frustrating things I find in the soil health world is the assumption that a management is good/bad rather than evaluating it within a given system/context. Finally some nuance - a great reminder!
Fabien Ferchaud📣 Just out in @commsearth.nature.com Our paper explores the role of tillage in agroecological systems, discussing the trade-offs between carbon, climate and pest management. We recommend moving beyond the simplistic view of 'tillage bad, no-till good'. Open access ➡️ doi.org/10.1038/s432...

Never thought a science journal could have a clever, relevant, and on-topic holiday message, but here we are! 🤓
New PhytologistSeason's greetings from all of us at New Phytologist and The New Phytologist Foundation!
WE ARE THE ALGORITHM
Richard WaiteIf something is bad, don’t make it sound even worse If something is good, don’t make it sound like the One Weird Trick that can fix everything If something sounds like it could be right, but you know it’s wrong, don’t write or reshare it Double check stuff before amplifying We are the algorithm
The data is just SO clear: the best things we can do for balancing ecosystem integrity and maintaining agricultural production is to avoid future land use change and intensify on current land. Land sparing >>> land sharing.
Richard WaiteThoughts on 1st scan: - Authors say ecosystem restoration can provide some mitigation, but not huge (couple billion tons CO2e/year). IOW necessary but not sufficient. - They said 2.8 Bha “available for restoration.” Good they excluded cropland, but not sure they excluded pasture - does anyone know?
“Hmm, it looks like you measured soil health without any actual agronomic or ecological outcomes again. Do you want to try?”
Richard Waite"Hmm. It looks like you forgot to count the land use again. Do you want to try?"
