Maybe he was really annoyed by the wasian meetup thing and this was a hate crime aimed at my very specific demographic of Chinese Jews? Or maybe this was a terrible act of violence by someone likely very ill that has little to do with politics except in the sense that we don’t care for sick people?

Is the theory of the hate crime that the suspect watched Mamdani’s video and then went out a stabbed an “Asian” dude who actually looked kind of Jewish and then got an actual Jewish guy later? Or are we thinking he saw Trump say negative things about Xi Jinping and ticked that off the list first?

the idea that this was a hate crime seemingly requires the construction of a hate-based ideology equally focused on ~unspecified Asians~ and Jews, and this article makes absolutely no attempt to substantiate that but just assumes that the reader, like everyone in it, will forget the Asian victim

i immediately lose respect for a writer when they do this bc it just screams "i'm not thinking about the words i'm using" which is harsh i know but it's gotta stop

a rule that I wish every writer would internalize is that prefacing a cliche with the word “proverbial” does not add anything, nor does it make you sound smart; it only draws attention to your use of a cliche

The thing is that I don’t go full blown British (not sure I could if I tried.) but I do tend to mirror some intonations and phrasings and sometimes things just come out in unexpected ways
