An interesting narrative comes from some teachers we have spoken to. Many say they would have preferred better funding for schools over an inflationary pay rise. As one teacher said: "Just enabling me to do one job rather than four would have been a better outcome" (4/5)

And next year's deal of 3 per cent will only look as good as inflation lets it look. Another 1 per cent saving requirement will also squeeze those struggling even further: joining a larger trust seems a likely necessity. Is that what the government wants? (3/5)

Some will see the fact schools only have to fund an average of 1 per cent out of existing budgets as a win - many larger trusts had expected to have to find more. But for some smaller trusts, single schools, and those with acute pressures, they are already at their limit. (2/5)
