this is key to the findings: "the team [added] Spanish-language papers, papers from smaller journals[,] and samples from a museum in central Mexico" to English sources, doubling their dataset. So much info out there if people are willing to investigate non-English records!

Did you know North and South America used to have a sea between them? South America was the Australia of the early Miocene, marsupials and all. Then, they joined at the Isthmus of Panama. And mammals from the north flooded south. Uh oh... www.sciencenews.org/article/mamm...

look, Panthera is great. But if you're reading a book about past and ongoing efforts by Wildlife Conservation Society to conserve Amur tigers, written by someone who works for WCS, and you want to donate money? Maybe Panthera (who does not work with Amurs at all) should not be your first thought

it's International Tiger Day! How about you pick up my book charting the remarkable recovery of Amur (Siberian) tigers in northeast Asia? It's got stinky biologists, harrowing adventure in the snow, & lots of tigers! @moonpalacebooks.bsky.social has signed copies: moonpalacebooks.com/item/f10yIDk...

at the moment I am juggling hundreds of nonfiction titles as a 2026 National Book Award for Nonfiction judge. What's one more book? Picked up Lily Brooks-Dalton's RUINS today solely due to @jeffvandermeer.bsky.social's endorsement on the back: "a stunning mystery... beautiful...highly recommended"

watch UHF last night, the 1989 @alyankovic.bsky.social flick. A friend made Twinkie Weiner Sandwiches. The combo of boiled hot dog, Twinkie, & cheese sprayed from a can is possibly grosser in the mouth than your imagination will allow (+ also seems like something @bencollins.bsky.social would enjoy)

This line pulls at my heart. The July 4ths at the Mall in my teens were parties. At that time "there were no security checkpoints, fences, or barricades. No National Guard, no jet flyovers....we sat right on the slope leading up to the [Washington] monument itself." The current "celebration" sucks

Andrea Pitzer

I wrote about past Fourths of July on the Mall, getting beaned by a hot firework, and the visual metaphor of barricades and fences in the nation's capital growing ever closer to the concentration camps like Delaney Hall—where it's also 100 degrees this weekend, but the air conditioning is busted.
