Former professional writer on film/TV/books, now just talking about them and my cat whenever someone lets me. Horror person. Half of Dundee’s Bizarro Video Club, Minnesota Wild fan, writing things. He/him

Loving Star City so much that I’m calling the cat “My Eagle” in a mediocre Rhys Ifans impression as he passes me on his way to and from his journeys into the garden and beyond.

I will always love that Larry Cohen wrote Phone Booth, a movie about a man who can’t get off the phone but can’t move, and Cellular, a movie about a man who can’t get off the phone and has to keep moving, and that they got made within two years of each other

I watched Larry Cohen’s The Ambulance last night, goddamn, what a movie. All-time Cohen pitch of “what if an ambulance took you to a mad doctor performing illegal experiments instead of hospital?” Wired Eric Roberts in the lead, weird James Earl Jones in support, Stan Lee cameo, nightclub sequence

“Luther, if you really were psychic…” “I’d have known you lied. There never was a deal. But I know you tried.” Ooof, Beyond the Sea is elite tier X-Files

I keep thinking about how awesome it is that Duncan Idaho is called Duncan Idaho. “You will have two fight mentors, the tough but fair one is called Gurney Halleck, the awesome dude one is called Johnny Utah.”

So happy about how absolutely fantastic John Leguizamo is in The Odyssey. Steals the damn film, what a performance. I’d heard about Samantha Morton too, and I mean she’s always brilliant but she’s really brilliant in The Odyssey.

Started watching Star City and so far, so very good. Impeccable cast (Anna Maxwell Martin! Adam Nagaitis! Alice Englert! David Dencik! Niamh Algar!), perfect tone, amazing set design, and British and Irish actors using regional accents. Career-best Rhys Ifans entering his Jared Harris era..

Did this at the other place during lockdown and it entertained me: A daily Brad Dourif character! 1. Tommy Ludlow, a jittery ex-con who’s a personal driver and possible serial killer in Eyes of Laura Mars (1978).

In the thick of the week of titrating onto a different epilepsy medication where I’m on the highest doses (for me) of both meds and let me tell you, it is a wacky whirlwind of being extremely spaced all of the time and unpredictable bursts of powerful nausea that last about 90 seconds.

Finally saw Bull. Further proof if needed that Neil Maskell is one of our best actors.

Oooooh it’s going to take make a very long time to come to terms with Sam Neill passing on.

An absolute wreck after watching Rose of Nevada. What an experience! And what an incredible treat to see it on 35mm at @dcadundee.bsky.social

Bizarro Video Club is taking July off but Rich and I have our mid-year favourite lists! Recommendations for what we’ve missed so far appreciated! We’ll be back in August at Canvas in Dundee for more weird and wonderful films for you.

Treating my shifts at a city multiplex during the summer holidays like I’m in The Pitt is almost definitely disrespectful to healthcare workers but it is helping me.

Also I love it when they show the video from the ref’s head cam because it looks like when they put a go pro on a dog’s collar and it just goes tearing around getting into mischief.

I’m sure that everyone has pointed this out a million times already but the head cameras on the referees keeps making me think of Camerahead from Hellraiser III: Hell on Earth. And I hate that movie. And I did not realise that dude is called Camerahead, but I feel like I should have.

Yes, mate!

WE HAVE AVOCET NEWS!!! An Avocet spotted at RSPB Middleton Lakes has been confirmed as the oldest ever recorded in the UK. At 36 years old, it's lived more than five times longer than the species' average lifespan. First ringed in 1990, it's still out there doing Avocet things. Go on Avocet. 😍

Just over halfway through Widow’s Bay and I am totally in love with it. “You had your QUALMS?!?” is my favourite moment since Ralph Fiennes Iron Maiden-ing in Bone Temple.

I started singing Sheep Detectives to the tune of Rock the Casbah at work when it came out at the Odeon and I am still doing it.

I saw the 4K restoration of 1985 anime Angel’s Egg the other day at the DCA courtesy of Dundead and I am still thinking about it. Holy shit, what an experience. The artistry, the patience, it’s so haunting. The sequences with the fishermen feel unlike anything I’ve ever seen before.
