There are some good reasons why you shouldn't pre-order things, but there are also some quite good ones. The most compelling of these is that when your pre-ordered product arrives, because you've already paid for it, it feels like you're receiving a present from yourself in the past.

This is indeed deeply insidious. As much as I am against the development of LLMs for slop purposes, and (if I could) would refuse my works for that purpose, these companies have access to mountains of cash. Why not approach publishers/authors and buy the AI training rights? Ans: laziness and greed.
