The LLM doesn't know if it's a direct quote. That's why it gave you a fake one the first time. It is just replicating patterns, accidentally accurate at best. You even seem to acknowledge that it's not reliable but then say you rely on it to correct itself.

This practice does tend to swell the word count a bit, but otherwise I'd be putting the same stuff in the main body of the text, so it probably makes no difference.

In articles, I have taken to adding a parenthetical after almost every citation (either a brief quote or a quick summary of the corroborating point). I read so many articles where the citations are minimal or vague, which for me, as the reader, is just not very helpful to my understanding.
