Me too. There's obviously substance there but I keep having to do little mental edits to make connections and explain (to myself) what he's referring to. Seems a shame that a writer still starting out hasn't been edited better before being hyped.

I'm going to have to leave this interesting discussion for the moment I'm afraid, disagreeing on some points. But I think we agree that Larkin is subtler than the version of him put to anti-intellectual use e.g. Burnham reaching for the beer drinking, despite the lack of beer in the actual poems...

This makes me wonder whether Burnham may have heard this JH Prynne lecture in Cambridge...

So my general argument about Larkin (whose poetry in general I admire very much, btw) is that his critics and left-liberal admirers have tended to present a softer version of him than he himself tried to present -- and even went out of his way to challenge (e.g. with newspaper interviews).
