Today's review is the 1953 kaiju-classic, The Beast From 20,000 Fathoms!

The Beast From 20,000 Fathoms (1953)The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms (1953) is another old favourite. It's a sort of proto-Godzilla, appearing a year prior to the king kaiju. I first saw it on television on a Saturday marathon and then, once I realised what I'd seen, I spent almost a decade trying to find a copy in order to watch it again. Ostensibly based on Ray Bradbury's "The Fog Horn", it diverges almost entirely from the source material and into similar territory (and a decidedly similar plot) as The Deadly Mantis (1957), i.e. a prehistoric horror, freed from the ice by man's hubris and set loose to terrify the modern world.joshuamreynolds.co.uk

I wrote a new thing for Arkham Horror, and it's about vampires!

The Ravenous UndeadIn a surprising turn of events, I have written something for Arkham Horror. Shocking, I know. Anyway, I recently had the pleasure of contributing a bit of vampire lore for folklorist Kōhaku Narukami’s Book of Living Myths, which you can read right here, if you're interested. I don't know what it might portend for Arkham or its citizens, but it's probably nothing good, I can tell you that. This one was fun. I got to dig out some of my older research books - if you're writing about a folklorist in 1920-something, you have to use sources from the period, which I happen to have quite a few of.joshuamreynolds.co.uk

Cursed Sea ClimaxMy ongoing Arkham Horror serial, Call of the Cursed Sea, comes to an end with a return to Arkham, and our heroes wondering where the Foundation goes from here. Presumably, there'll be answers in that regard soon enough. But only time will tell if the Foundation survives the changes to come. Cursed Sea ShenanigansMy ongoing Arkham Horror serial, Call of the Cursed Sea, continues with Chapter Nine, and Trish, Roland and Mabati up to their necks in batrachian horror as they make a stand against the Deep Ones in Orkney. But there are other players in this game. The only question is, are they friend or foe? I think anyone who's a fan of Arkham Horror or Lovecraft's work in general probably saw much of this story coming. I wasn't exactly subtle, then subtlety is overrated. Today's review is the 2021 spaghetti western by way of occult horror thriller, Saloum...

Saloum (2021)This one was a pleasant surprise. I watched it on a recommendation from a friend, who described it as a spaghetti western by way of a horror film, set in Senegal. Which is a pretty good way of describing it. The film has a wonderful, dreamlike quality to it - only enhanced by the characters' use and acceptance of magic. Yann Gael's Chaka and his fellow mercenaries live in a twilight world of violence and sorcery, and when the murderous spirits show up in the last third, they're only momentarily thrown for a loop.joshuamreynolds.co.uk

The latter, dressed similarly, if somewhat more fashionably, sat nearby, a cup of cooling tea by his hand. “It’s not an actual giant, it should be noted,” Burchill interjected. He was also a Ministry man, though somewhat senior to Whitley. “Pity,” Baron Palman Vordenburg replied. Having watched In the Mouth of Madness (1994) again, I'm convince the scariest bit of the movie is the dog running from the kids. That's the bit that gets me; not the jump-scares or the gribblies. Just that poor dog, eternally fleeing from the children.

Today's review is the 2024 'weird place in the woods' film, The Watchers...

The Watchers (2024)I went into this one with...I wouldn't call it hesitation, exactly. A lack of preconceptions? I knew what it was about. I knew the twist ahead of time, and I was interested to see how it was delivered. I tend to do that with movies; I'm not a twist guy. I don't care about spoilers, really. It probably seems odd to say that, but there we are. But, in the interests of keeping this one spoiler free, I'll avoid talking about it.
