Unpopular opinion. even if automakers did “take the streetcars from Detroit” (highly debatable!), that’s not an excuse for 75 years of inaction. it’s a ridiculous story to keep leaning on and lets the entire political class and electorate off the hook for their poor choices

Detroit should probably be doing this, but with closer to a million.

Cincinnati has developed a Climate Migration Readiness Plan to absorb as many as 525,000 newcomers by 2050. It calls for building much denser housing, expanding public transit and decreasing the city’s reliance on fossil fuels.

the hours of operation for the gordie howe bride multi-use path are out! and they're predictably terrible. 8am to 8pm and you have to be on the bridge 1 hour before it closes. so at the bridge by 7pm. so functionally you can't go to windsor for anything but the earliest of dinners/events

and it barely has any parking for bicycles

Capitol Park exemplifies the power of the 1807 Judge Woodward Plan for #Detroit. Its triangular form, framed by compatible mid- and high-rise buildings, creates exceptional enclosure and identity. Angled streets generate picturesque views. It’s a destination for downtown workers and residents.

Detroit has precisely 2 of these and they're currently both disabled/broken. It's incredibly depressing.

The War on Cars

Every city needs more bike counters. It's a great way to show that bike lanes are busy even when they appear empty. (And they often appear empty because cyclists don't get stuck in traffic.)

I hate to sling such a lukewarm take as "Detroit is car-dependent", but today I tried to use MoGo bikeshare and it just straight up didn't work. I tried multiple stations and I couldn't take out a bike. It took my money tho! So then I waited for a DDOT bus that never showed. No cancellation notice.
