Unlikely but if the fire does reach Sizewell, I'll be getting in my car and getting some way away. Upwind by about 30 miles from me at the moment.

It's 18 miles from Dunwich to Clacton (29 miles by road). Is it possible voters in Tendring will taste the wildfire smoke there? Unlikely. Clacton is south facing and the Naze, several rivers including the Stour, Orwell and Alde lie in between. But if they do, will it change their minds on Net Zero?

Dunwich Heath - 140 football pitches of it is on fire - that must be pretty much all of it gone. The RSPB spokesperson who was just on the World at One sounded remarkably unmoved-perhaps he was in shock. The staff and volunteers who have cared for and nurtured that habitat must be devastated.

With Dunwich it's usually coastal erosion which gets in the news, not massive wildfires. You've probably heard about the ghostly bells of Dunwich. In medieval times, it was a thriving port.

I used to sit up on Dunwich Heath, surveying bitterns in the reedbeds of Minsmere below It's a beautiful area, and one of the most important in the country for birds and other wildlife This is so sad
