Christian. Artistic hack. Trans. Maybe a weeb idk. She/they

Rewatched the first Mamoru Oshii Ghost in The Shell movie with a friend this afternoon. While I do love the FMA:B treatment the new series is giving the manga, Oshii's GiTS adaptations are such beautiful animated tone poems that will probably remain my favourite take on the material

I mean, Wagner does strike me as the one major romantic composer most likely to be bewitched by AI (he is in some ways the James Cameron of the 19th century). And Nietzsche would of course have included an entire florid diatribe complaining about it in Nietzsche Contra Wagner

I'm surprised this is not a literal crime in Germany (It is, of course, an artistic crime that deserves the most severe punishment) www.ft.com/content/181e...

The thing is, feeling small in the face of the infinite divine is very consoling

Yes, we managed to get a good Odyssey movie that survived all the culture war rage, but for Hard Mode: can we please get a good bible movie that isn't about pandering to the usual suspects?

Incredibly, I found a copy of Proclus’ commentary on Parmenides in a used bookstore. My Hot Platonist Summer continues apace

I've spent enough time revisiting Plato now that I feel more confident in taking another swing at Plotinus

I always seem to have too many bookmarks until suddenly I need one

There are more fun disguises in the second Aubrey-Maturin novel than I would have anticipated

Unironically though Emily Wilson and Joyce Carol Oates are showing us what quality literate discourse actually looks like. This is the sort of fun & drama you can have if you don't defund the humanities

Honestly laughing out loud that 88-year-old shit-stirring Olympian Joyce Carol Oates looked up in the sky, saw the Batsignal, and headed to her laptop. www.hollywoodreporter.com/movies/movie...

Replaying Shantae and the Pirate’s Curse and being reminded how this series just kinda completely mastered translating the Rumiko Takahashi cute/sexy/campy anime aesthetic to game format. It just threads that precise tonal needle perfectly

Saw The Odyssey a second time. It holds up, and, importantly, holds up perfectly fine on a non-IMAX screen

Ok *this* time I’m really gonna master Ancient Greek

I've also been listening to Epic: The Musical lately and as great as the Nolan Odyssey is, it's also very exciting to have a modern adaptation in its native mode - as something you *listen* to rather than see

Putting aside the immorality of it I'm just tired of being constantly inundated with gambling/casino ads

The ‘man thinking about Ancient Rome’ to ‘trans woman weeping over the fall of Troy’ pipeline

Basically if you dissolve the notion of truth into communitarian narratives as a general rule the right will take this as permission to have their narrative dominate by force while the left will just...not do that. But also lack the enthusiasm for democratic reform processes so important for Rorty

Notable perhaps that while MacIntyre became a darling of integralist & adjacent right wing Christians (admittedly somewhat against his will) Rorty to my knowledge never had a similar influence over the left

I started reading some Richard Rorty today (Pragmatism as Anti-Authoritarianism) and my initial impression is that he is kinda a secular liberal Alasdair MacIntyre. It's been a while since I read the latter but they both seem to be offering vdifferent flavours of the same postmodern communitarianism

At this point I’m like 90% convinced that the Agamemnon Batman armour everyone was making fun of is actually part of an auto-critique of The Dark Knight’s cultural impact

Nolan’s Odyssey was amazing, I tested up watching it. But I wasn’t expecting how much of it is a lament for how sociopolitically fucked our current moment is. Very much, “we broke the social contract and lost our innocence and there’s no going back”
