Rewatched the first Mamoru Oshii Ghost in The Shell movie with a friend this afternoon. While I do love the FMA:B treatment the new series is giving the manga, Oshii's GiTS adaptations are such beautiful animated tone poems that will probably remain my favourite take on the material

I mean, Wagner does strike me as the one major romantic composer most likely to be bewitched by AI (he is in some ways the James Cameron of the 19th century). And Nietzsche would of course have included an entire florid diatribe complaining about it in Nietzsche Contra Wagner
Carolyn FiddlerI'm surprised this is not a literal crime in Germany (It is, of course, an artistic crime that deserves the most severe punishment) www.ft.com/content/181e...
Unironically though Emily Wilson and Joyce Carol Oates are showing us what quality literate discourse actually looks like. This is the sort of fun & drama you can have if you don't defund the humanities
Mark HarrisHonestly laughing out loud that 88-year-old shit-stirring Olympian Joyce Carol Oates looked up in the sky, saw the Batsignal, and headed to her laptop. www.hollywoodreporter.com/movies/movie...
Extremely late 2000s-early 2010s bad movie concept. A relic lost in time
DiscussingFilmFirst poster for ‘EBENEZER’, a new film based on ‘A Christmas Carol’ starring Johnny Depp. “Before he was Scrooge, he was Ebenezer”
Basically if you dissolve the notion of truth into communitarian narratives as a general rule the right will take this as permission to have their narrative dominate by force while the left will just...not do that. But also lack the enthusiasm for democratic reform processes so important for Rorty
jessNotable perhaps that while MacIntyre became a darling of integralist & adjacent right wing Christians (admittedly somewhat against his will) Rorty to my knowledge never had a similar influence over the left
I started reading some Richard Rorty today (Pragmatism as Anti-Authoritarianism) and my initial impression is that he is kinda a secular liberal Alasdair MacIntyre. It's been a while since I read the latter but they both seem to be offering vdifferent flavours of the same postmodern communitarianism
At this point I’m like 90% convinced that the Agamemnon Batman armour everyone was making fun of is actually part of an auto-critique of The Dark Knight’s cultural impact
jessNolan’s Odyssey was amazing, I tested up watching it. But I wasn’t expecting how much of it is a lament for how sociopolitically fucked our current moment is. Very much, “we broke the social contract and lost our innocence and there’s no going back”
