Some recent choices were certainly destined to fail, and so their destiny goes. But anyone who mocked Trump for the “war torn Portland” narrative a year ago might notice a resemblance and similarly mock the local version of that narrative today.

None of this is that far outside of what I normally do. But with the space to let my mind wander and notice new things, I’m just appalled that there’s supposedly some war here I do not perceive. Maybe it’s only visible to the bots.

Speaking of law enforcement’s role in public perception of crime: The sudden need for funding comes despite the DA claiming not long ago that a change was underway regarding high priority cases (homicides excepted). For reference, Portland 2026 homicides YTD = 6.

This is by no means a knock on any single reporter. Dave Miller is an inspiration as an interviewer and journalist. The propaganda in this moment around policing, however, is crazy making!

Abolishing slavery was unpopular and felt scary to most people too but that doesn’t mean abolitionists were wrong to tell the truth.

I’m not an advocate but I’m not sure why diverting climate money to hire sworn (read: armed) police officers would help address the issues you’re talking about. “Crime is mailable, and most are due to poverty and could be solved by a strong social safety net. But abolition sounds scary!

Again, there’s a lot to learn from people on the ground, doing work to let the public know what’s up. I sincerely applaud anyone doing it! Yes, I hear your point. I think its baked into my previous argument that parroting police/business narratives, for instance, isn’t actually adhering to the standards I’m defending. It’s an abdication of journalistic duty to write “police say,” copy a press release, and ask no further questions. 1/2
