I found this really cool mantid on an old cart. It was not able to fly, and in the last frame, you can see why. It has a large termite soldier clamped on to its thorax! Evidently, this mantid is in the genus Parastagmatoptera

Mystery solved. This is a spider in the genus Phoroncidia, maybe P. gira. Only the third observation of this species on @inaturalist.bsky.social

Felt batty

now one thing that confuses me... you say the victim died suddenly yesterday but there's a bunch of fourth-instar calliphorid maggots in their clothes, and if there's one thing i know it's that kids may grow up fast but they don't grow up THAT fast

Ah thank you! This is the first year I've seen them in our yard, which is exciting. They also seem to like to sleep in very photo-friendly spots, not all bees are so cooperative.

Personally I like small sets sometimes because I already have a large collection of supplies from years of doing this stuff, and if the set works together - like a nice neutral set - it can give me a chance to fill out a gap, or just try something new
