I think the problem with big salary discrepancy is that it feeds class solidarity with donors and against workers. That makes administrators worse stewards of the university mission. I don't think a university president, much less a dean, needs to make more than a governor or US cabinet secretary.

Most would do a better job if they HATED schmoozing with donors and politicians, and took offense at attempts to coerce universities and attack academic freedom.
