Freelance sports and football writer for the Morning Star newspaper, FotMob, World Soccer magazine, Guardian US, BBC, and the Soccer Times. MLS, USL, US Open Cup, Concacaf and American soccer reverie. They have a world [cup] to win.

Open Cup, Concacaf Champions Cup should be the priority for US Soccer teams, not the Leagues Cup, especially not this season with the World Cup break. Instead MLS withdrew teams from the domestic cup again to accommodate it. There are similarities between FIFA's latest stunt and how MLS/SUM operate.

And sadly the Open Cup is the only way (and wrong way) that they've gone about it. Kill the All Star Game. Pick 1 competition with Liga MX, make Leagues Cup into a glorified 1-shot warmup for the start of the new aperture. Thats t

Inviting private equity to buy a stake in the World Cup explains a lot of Infantino's behavior during a 2026 tournament where everything was for sale. It is already a blight on the club game and should be resisted in international football. This weekend's Morning Star column.

And this is what has already happened to the club game, most prominently in UEFA.

Neoliberalism in a nutshell. UEFA on FIFA's proposal: “The moment external investors acquire ownership interests ... football changes forever. Commercial return becomes a permanent obligation. ... Every decision is no longer driven by what best serves the game, but by what best serves shareholders.”

Statement from FIFA president Gianni Infantino, announcing that plans to introduce a commercial arm of FIFA with stakes for private equity has been scrapped.

One of my favourite niche subjects - soccer played on baseball fields - reached a wider audience this week thanks to Liverpool vs Wrexham at Yankee Stadium, so I took the opportunity to write about it again here for @nysoccertimes.com nysoccertimes.com/yankee-stadi...

FIFA reach the "label critical media reporting as fake news" section of the Trump playbook.

Tickets for this were $49, so quite a bit cheaper than some of the other friendlies. I think people have football fatigue.

About 10 minutes to kickoff at Sports Illustrated Stadium for Leeds United vs Sunderland. Tough crowd, lower bowl only, hearing only 8,000 or so tickets sold for tonight. Stark difference from last night in the Bronx. #LUFC #SAFC

Welcome non-MLS watchers to the Yankee Stadium football field size discourse. The pitch dimensions are roughly the same as Fulham's Craven Cottage, maybe slightly narrower. Looks smaller due to the angles of the stands by the pitch and the camera angle.

Disappointed Freese didn't score with more throws given his strength in that area of the game, though the one he does is unstoppable.

One thing for modern football, it's been great at highlighting to a wider audience how bad capitalism is.

Vermont Green haven't lost a game in USL since 21 July 2024.

The Soccer Times

Vermont Green FC has made an unbeaten run to the USL League Two national championship game for the second season in a row. These were the celebrations following Arnaud Tattevin's go-ahead goal in extra time in last year's conference final.

Explains FIFA's profit-first approach to this World Cup as an organisation that is supposedly non-profit. Infantino would be profiting from exploiting fans via high ticket prices at this World Cup. It shouldn't be his to sell.

Fifa’s president Gianni Infantino is planning to sell stakes in the World Cup to private investors under a scheme that could potentially earn him tens of millions of pounds, sources have told The Times

My latest MLS roundup for FotMob - the first post-World Cup. Plenty of unfolding stories in the opening games in what, in some ways, feels like the start of a new season. It'll take time to settle. www.fotmob.com/en-GB/topnew...

Also -an idea- New York Cosmos should replace NYCFC as NYC's nomadic team. They should push to move higher up when USL restructures with a Div I league (they are the New York Cosmos after all) and play in the baseball stadiums as NYCFC did.

It's still funny they played a home game in LA. They needed a home but I quite liked the NYCFC nomads era. It was one of the things that provided additional interest in MLS regular seasons that are often in need of additional interest.

New York City FC moves into a new stadium at Willets Point, Queens, next year, ending its nomadic era. Here are the locations across New York and the USA that NYCFC nomads have called home.
