I work at a public library. People who want to use AI seem to have no trouble doing so. People who don't want to use AI have a harder time. I crowdsourced and then finalized this document "How to disable or avoid intrusive AI" and then gave it a short URL: notoai.org Please pass along if it's useful

“An edited video of the meeting published by the Vatican showed Smith seated in front of Leo's desk and saying ‘Hi’ while wearing a broad smile, to which the pope responded ‘Hi’ before breaking into laughter.” www.ncronline.org/vatican/pope...

Last week the posy I brought home from the garden had a chrysalis attached though I didn't notice till I got home. If you, like me, haven't watched a butterfly emerge you won't be prepared for how amazing or how long emergence takes #TinyJoys a 🧵

"I don’t often see myself as an environmental historian...partly this is cowardice: I’m not sure how environmental historians bear it. Although the fires are a ‘natural’ disaster, their human causes in this region have been apparent for a century and a half. And here we are, again. 💔

Some historical background to the fires in southwestern France, drawing on reading I did for my 2019 book about the moorlands, and lamenting the deeply depressing reality that we have known many of the causes of this ecological disaster for 150years 🗃️ williamgpooley.wordpress.com/2026/07/30/u...

Shut them down. But, oh, the damage done.

Dr. Jeroen W.P. Wijnendaele

No longer content with pillaging intellectual work and dismembering our environment (already critically weakened), AI companies are now hellbent on destroying books galore including rare editions. Shut down these nefarious enterprises already.

This whole 🧵, & the review itself.

7. The film centers Odysseus's guilt over his war crimes, but never shows us the POV of his victims, and instead glorifies the perpetrator for feeling bad about himself. I found this unsatisfying ethically and worse, imaginatively, because Damon's character is given only one mood (Troubled).

Whew! As Wilson notes in the last para., the debates/interest in Classics generated by this film are good for us. Looking forward to seeing it soon, even as/because? this review evokes my response to earlier films by this director.

‘Nolan has read at least the first line of my translation of 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘖𝘥𝘺𝘴𝘴𝘦𝘺 into iambic pentameter. In one interview, he cited my version of it: “Tell me about a complicated man.” But I would be ashamed to have written any part of this script.’ New, by Emily Wilson www.lrb.co.uk/the-paper/v4...

Beautiful statement of what history is & who historians are at this moment when we need both so much. In solidarity with you, colleagues.

Dr Laura Sangha

Last week, about a third of the History department were able to gather together on graduation day. Rather than lend our intellectual authority to the official procession and ceremony we invited our students to come and celebrate their achievements with us in a shady courtyard. They came. 1/

okay I’m starting a new thread because the last one was getting unwieldy but the dark corners of the right-wing Catholic internet have yielded some answers and I think the abbot may also have been evil this is internecine drama among villains and, spoiler alert, it all goes back to antisemitism!

Bravo, Mexico. Shame, shame, shame on the US.

Carney: "I'm going to take this opportunity to thank President Scheinbaum and the Mexican people for sending 200 firefighters to help us with our fires here. That's what friends do when you have crisis and fires." #cdnpoli

A bit of much needed breathing space.

I’ve been standing stock still in this wood for about 10 minutes while I mess about with a photo on my phone. I look up, notice the shape, and slowly crouch down to film This has made me so happy I feel I could cry. It’s as close to magic as I hope to get.
