A lot of artists I legitimately love took part in re-branding Japanese media for the US, and did technically and creatively competent work, that still none the less played into the same "we can't sell this because it's too Asian" attitude that was unfortunately commonplace during the era.

How this specific film was marketed in the United States tracks with how other Japanese media was treated during the same time period, where art that was too "Asian" was specifically downplayed in promotional material, usually redrawn to match Western ideas of what fantasy should look like.

I feel like you are fixated on this one film, and it's European release it not what I am speaking about in this thread. This thread is about anti-Japanese sentiment in the US in the 80s to early 90s & how that affected the perception and marketing of Japanese media in the United States specifically.

I would 100% say that the marketing material is intentionally disguising it's Japanese origins. Miyazaki's art (outside of two screenshots on the VHS case) is no where to be found. The movie poster makes no mention of his name. Even Nausicaa is downplayed as a character.

Yes, someone made this correction as well already. I had read an article that misstated that the Weinsteins were involved in this localization but obviously that was incorrect and I was not aware. However, I feel my broader point that Japanese media was regularly & poorly "westernized" still stands.
