purity, pattern matching, recursion, types, induction: all cool ideas I have got on with in other places, and yet I have never written a haskell program that actually does anything

thing is, I have done significant work in other pure languages, most recently erlang, and I've written a couple of logic languages. the purity is not the stumbling block, it's literally how do you glue any of this up to the normal unix i/o facilities, how do you get a system going

for me it was less ecosystem stuff and more that the widely recommended learning materials do nothing but show you building blocks and at no point go "let's write an actual program". like I have a thorough theoretical idea of how to program in it, I just never have

it's easy to read most programming books and come away thinking "ok but that's not what Real Software is, is it? I can't go off and build <insert program here> with this can I" and the book exists to say Actually You Can

some subjects are better at this than others. database internals books are a bit better at conveying how to design systems that pure programming books. whereas I have read quite a lot about the haskell programming language and have never successfully written a program in it

it's impossible to cram all the knowledge that goes into software design into one book but I at least wanted to make something very broad, that would introduce people to a wide spectrum of different programming topics *by integrating them together* rather than giving an isolated tutorial on each one

a definite frustration of mine that motivated "building git" was how few books exist on building entire programs and systems rather than just showing you the building blocks

there are anecdotes flying around about students only reading the dialog in novels, not the narration, which feels like the same thing. lots of reactions to films feel like people only perceive the plot events in some abstracted form and ignore the way anything is depicted
