At Gen Con, excited to learn more about this game that I assume focuses on @themountaingoats.bsky.social

I’ll be signing with Mike at the Friday 2 pm slot, begging him to provide writing tips! And also sweep out the booth!

Michael A. Stackpole 🇺🇦

Thanks to Bryan Young for putting together this nifty schedule of where I'll be at Gencon next week!

I kissed a beautiful woman this morning and walked free in a picture-perfect Chicago day, so who’s winning masculinity now?

Weirdly, while I have plenty of rejections, they’ve pretty much all been either professional or bland. Nothing to enrage me. Online reviews are a different matter but don’t really count as “authority figures.”

John Scalzi

I suspect most writers have that one authority figure who was snide about their writing, allowing that writer to be fueled by spite for years if not decades. My version was the creative writing prof who was dismissive about science fiction. I sent him a copy of Old Man's War when it was published.

I love Speaker for the Dead. I wish Card would read it again to underline how important it is to understand people from their perspective, not yours.

Some light reading last week

Here's a thing I've been working on that can finally be talked about!

Catalyst Game Labs

Enter the wild inter-dimensional world of Travis Deverell's He Who Fights With Monsters! Travis has partnered with Catalyst Game Labs to bring the world of his series to the tabletop in a big way! bit.ly/HWFWM-Announcement #LitRPG #HeWhoFightsWithMonsters #HWFWM

Lunch in the greatest city in the world.

I've been dreading that someone who had my number might call me randomly and just want to talk. So I put my phone on silent.

The Guardian

I’d been craving the immediacy of a phone call. So I scrolled through my contacts and started dialling | Samantha Allemann

In the manuscript I just finished, I included a boat named the "Little Death." I was worried it might be too crass, but apparently on the boat-owner scale, it might be too subtle.

Chicago Tribune

The owner of an Oak Lawn methadone clinic has been charged in a massive fraud scheme that allegedly swindled tens of millions of dollars from government programs that were used to fund an extravagant lifestyle, including brokerage accounts, luxury cars, jewelry and a yacht named “Butt Nekkid.”

Twitocracy (n): Government by and for terminally online weirdos. Gonna roll this around in my head for a while, see if I like it as a label.

This definitely appeals to a certain subset of people. I don’t have a preferred mayoral candidate yet, but I’ve been riding the train past the Uptown Theater for 30 years and heard all the ideas to fix it, and I’d _love_ to see the inside.

Eric Erins

Apparently Mike Quigley is hosting his mayoral kickoff INSIDE the uptown theatre this Saturday and if I were in town I’d RSVP just to be in there lmao

How are you going to lose Chicago? There’s so much of it! I mean, every direction I turn right now, there it is! Pretty easy to find! But if Trump can’t find it, me and my immigrant neighbors will be just fine.

Aaron Rupar

Trump calls for sending federal troops into cities: "I'd love to do Chicago because Chicago is potentially great city. But you're gonna lose it. It's gotta be done. I'd love to do it in Los Angeles. I'd love to do it in NYC. We remove the bad people from those cities so they never come back"

Fascinating historical tidbit: The longstanding term for a deal that is not finalized and may need to be further negotiated at gunpoint is “not a deal.”

George Pearkes

oh *TRUMP: IRAN MOU IS NOT FINAL *TRUMP: IF I DON'T LIKE WHAT I SEE, WE'LL STRIKE AGAIN

If this works, my go-to legal defense forever will be "Your honor, you need to keep letting me break the law, because I promised other people I would break the law if they gave me money! And they did! And I don't want to give up that money!" IANAL, obviously, but feels pretty air-tight.

Norm Eisen

BREAKING: Donald Trump just filed his emergency stay in the DC circuit to keep his name on the Kennedy Center & it is batsh** crazy He clearly wrote big pieces himself We have filed our opposition, fighting for the rule of law & the American people

Oooo, guess who's gonna get an earful about the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District next time I see him in person! It's great! Owns lots of land! Can do some cool green stuff if the right people are involved!

Let me help you out, Mike. Quote D&C 134:7 at him: "We believe that rulers, states, and governments have a right, and are bound to enact laws for the protection of all citizens in the free exercise of their religious belief; [1/2]

Ron Filipkowski

Mike Lee demands that Pete Hegseth immediately reverse the new Pentagon policy that excludes Mormons from DOD’s list of recognized Christian denominations. He says it is “offensive” and “repugnant.”

These are the two Americas right now: One America desperately wants asshole immunity like Trump, where they can be as big an asshole as they want and never suffer a negative consequence. The other can't imagine why you'd want to be such an asshole. This is not dependent on party.
