All this talk about the early, terrifying days of Covid .. and I couldn't help but look back at a project I worked on at the time. We memorialized the lives of people who ran into the burning building. Time well spent and worth a moment of yours: www.theguardian.com/us-news/ng-i...

Lost on the frontline: US healthcare workers who died fighting Covid-19More than 3,500 Americans in the healthcare system have died fighting Covid-19. We count them and investigate whywww.theguardian.com

I spent much of my fellowship from 2019-2020 researching and writing about the dangers of private equity in healthcare. Many even within healthcare didn’t see the writing on the wall or understand what was happening and, admittedly, a lot of other important things happened in healthcare that year.

Mother Jones

Missed payments. Slashed staffing. Broken security. A patient who froze to death on the roof of a hospital. Inside American Healthcare System, the for-profit healthcare behemoth driving hospitals around the country to financial chaos.

The FDA used to have a warning on its website against bogus autism “remedies,” eg, the dangerous—sometimes deadly—chelation pushed by RFK Jr & his antivaxx ally David Geier RFK Jr ordered the warnings to be removed 😢 Anyone who tells me I must “find common cause” with MAHA & its leader can STFU

Darkest Timeline

I remember when RFK jrs fans were into chelation. I've got a 20 something autistic kid, and it was part of his antivax nonsense.

getting the basic standard of care for a loved one with psychosis is an absolute nightmare in this country if you aren’t wealthy. this is compounded by the stigma—hell, the only time most people even use the word is when speculating on shootings in the news or using it as a pejorative online.

I heard a story on @npr.org today about FDA approval of sunscreens and they discussed the case for “peer approval” (automatically approving drugs if a sister agency in another country had). I was shocked they didn’t mention this story for context:

Admirable Women

Dr. Frances Oldham Kelsey single-handedly blocked the "wonder drug" thalidomide (US, FDA, 1960) & saved American children from severe birth defects. The first woman to earn a PhD in pharmacology, she used her expertise & immense courage to defy intense industry pressure. #WomenInSTEM (1/2)

Good reminder of how hard it is to access health insurance for people who are disabled by their conditions but in the waiting period for coverage for SSDI/Medicare. The mortality during the wait period for people with cancer (neoplasms) is nearly 40%. www.healthaffairs.org/doi/epdf/10....
