the REAL audience score is the one that includes people who didn't actually watch it. makes sense to me

the neorealist style works wonderfully for this material. it doesn't even matter that the scenery is so recognizably italian. it just feels so immediate, and a lot of the handheld camera work looks breathtaking

sticking closely to the text and the one perspective makes this jesus (matthew's but also pasolini's) come into sharp focus as a sort of proto marxist figure (as an aside, how crazy is it that millionaire megachurch preacher types just brush aside what the guy said about rich people and heaven?)

10. THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO ST. MATTHEW. my first pasolini and it's a great one! his approach still feels radical and unmatched: instead of an amalgamation or a greatest hits of jesus pop culture moments, he's sticking to one book and adapts it like a work of literature
