Exactly the same at my school, but I rebelled and insisted on doing typing (a rather pathetic act of rebellion I know, but as one of the more academic pupils it was definitely frowned on). By a considerable distance the most useful thing I learned at school.

I‘ve lived in Australia and Belgium; both have compulsory voting and it’s not a big deal. Back in the UK now and I’m utterly baffled at some of the discourse on compulsory voting. Why are people so hostile to it?

To be fair, it was dead long before Starmer came along. The legislation was introduced by the Tories but they never had a serious plan to implement it.

I worked on that legislation. We spent years on it, but we all knew it would never work in practice because there was no money to pay for it. Which is exactly what happened.

Tories just can't help themselves. They're like petulant teenagers. Even if they fully support a policy, they'll criticise in some way: "that's a good idea but... you should have done it years ago/we thought of it first", etc. It's deeply irritating, and I can't imagine it wins over many people.

I was disappointed by food in Bhutan; I’d heard it was spicy but everything we had was bland. It turned out that they deliberately took a lot of the flavour out for tourists, because most of them couldn’t handle the heat! That was many years ago though, so hopefully they’ve found a happy medium now.

We mostly used F here (UK) when I was a kid. I eventually got to grips with C, though it took me a while. Now I only think in degrees C, and can’t begin to get my head around F!

Journalist friend tells me that vox pops are always manipulated. Mostly the public doesn’t say much of interest, so broadcasters either cherry-pick the juicy ones, or interviewees are prompted in some way. It’s in no way representative of wider views. I hate them; just tell me the news, please!
