Where that gets complicated is that depicting facial expression is still a skill, so for some run-of-the-mill conventional anime artist who's basically spent their entire life drawing smiley faces with big hair, even simplified furry art still requires some sort of basic muzzle structure

One thing that's interesting about furry art as a dabbler is that furry art is way more expressive on average. I think expression gets a lot more priority because there's less uncanny valley with a dog face than there is with a human, so it's easier for more artists to achieve better results.
