Some context on the journalistic framing here: 1. This is, in fact, Leo's first real U.S. television interview since becoming the pontiff. 2. The interview consists of 1.5 questions, and is exactly 2:15 min long. He has spoken to other reporters for much longer. www.youtube.com/watch?v=NnDh...

Released Texas pastors say immigration agents threatened family separation(RNS) — At a Sunday service after their release, which was backed by a range of Latino evangelical groups, the Assemblies of God pastors urged Christians to speak out for immigrants.religionnews.comNancy Levine Stearns

🧵 NEW: A spokesperson for Billy Graham Evangelistic Association, where Franklin Graham is president and CEO, messaged me today about two married pastors in the U.S. on religious visas who were arrested by ICE last week in Texas as they were trying to fly to a Billy Graham marriage conference.

Rep. Jamie Raskin told me he rejects the notion that Jewish Dems should vote as a bloc, including on Israel. That played out in a recent vote to cut military aid to Israel: 13 Jewish Dems voted against, but 1 didn't vote, and 8 voted in favor — including Raskin. religionnews.com/2026/07/30/w...

The House vote that split Jewish Democrats and is reshaping alliances(RNS) — 'I think it's a sign of health, as well as inevitable, that the Jewish members of Congress would approach this vote from different perspectives,' Rep. Jamie Raskin said.religionnews.com

Relatedly: The people are clamoring — CLAMORING, I say — for a movie about the Religious Left. American Prophets is right there.

NEW: Debates over Israel are dividing Democrats and general, and that includes Jewish Democrats. I spoke with Reps. Raskin and Landsman about recent votes on Israel funding, as well as Jewish advocacy groups navigating the changing political landscape around Israel. religionnews.com/2026/07/30/w...

PARIS (AP) — A wildfire in southwest France grew so powerful that its smoke column became a thunderstorm, generating lightning that struck the ground and ignited new fires beyond the original blaze, French officials said.

The new Netflix show “The Hawk” is an absolutely fascinating example of a group project gone awry, in that the cinematographer is clearly bringing every once of talent they have to the screen, a couple of the actors are trying, and basically everyone else gave up — especially the writers.

Relatedly: Hamilton is reportedly already setting (or about to set) fundraising records in the state. In other words: Even if he doesn't win, Hamilton's run — should he win the primary — may force the GOP to burn money defending what should've been a safe seat. www.kansascity.com/news/politic...

KC-area pastor breaks Kansas fundraising record in bid for Marshall’s Senate seatThe Rev. Adam Hamilton’s campaign reported receiving $3.66 million from 16,336 individual donors between April 30 and June 30.www.kansascity.comJason Rosenbaum

Also, I think people who follow elections really need to pay attention to this race. Hamilton, should he get the nomination, could end up being a very strong challenger to Marshall especially in a Blue Wave year.

Wild to see folks re-litigate the fundamentalist-modernist controversy of the early 20th century. Rejecting inerrancy has been a common dividing line between mainline Christians (which includes KS senate Dem candidate Rev. Hamilton, who is UMC) and evangelicals/fundamentalists for roughly a century

I'm only going to vague-post about it but y'all I recently received the most *hilarious* scam communique that makes intensely evident how AI has simultaneously allowed scammers to become far more sophisticated even as many scam *ideas* remain very, very dumb.

This is what I'm talking about when I say pushback to Big Tech and AI be found on virtually all ends of the political — and theological — spectrum. Per this report, the guy you see below (that's his porch) compares the sound of a data center to literal torture. www.youtube.com/watch?v=9wDr...

What are you reading this weekend?

Trying to track the point of moral/philosophical inquiry raised here: if ending policies that feed/give medical aid to people don’t equate to killing them, then who/what did? Reframed granularly: if a doctor withholds lifesaving care without consent, does Bremmer think the doctor isn’t responsible?

Faine Greenwood

Fuck you, Ian Bremmer, you abject ghoul.

The other thing for non-journalists to keep in mind: there’s a presumption that the WHCD showcases journalistic elite, but I’d argue that’s not really how journalism works. I.e., Stories of national import cross many beats, and most are broken by folks who likely’ve never been to the WHCD.

Jack Jenkins

Hot take: past iterations notwithstanding, maybe the presidential appearance at the WHCD (assuming it remains a thing, which folks are now openly questioning) should be an onstage interview, not a speech.

You know what I miss? The days when reporting ecosystems and animals (Nat Geo in particular, but there were others) was popular and, crucially, well-funded. Feels like a kind of reporting that’d be super valuable right now.

NEW via @alejacorazonhm.bsky.social: Leaders in the Assemblies of God — DHS Sec. Markwayne Mullin’s own denomination — say pastors with religious visas were detained and “pressured” with separation from their children if they didn’t sign voluntary departure papers religionnews.com/2026/07/24/p...

Detained pastor couple had religious worker visas, Assemblies of God leaders say(RNS) — Pastor Nepthali Zozaya Saucedo, 36, said he and his wife, who came to the U.S. legally, were repeatedly pressured to sign voluntary departure papers but that they had refused.religionnews.com
