I'm not qualified to judge whether such people are psychopaths. All I can say is that they behave as if they are. From today's Telegraph.

Sitka is not native to Ireland, and is planted in monocultures for timber production.

That's true of many places, but not Ireland.

Planting does have a role in bringing back our lost native forests for nature, timber, recreation and climate, but *only* as backup where natural regeneration won't work.

Just 6 or 7 years ago, this was a clear-felled Sitka plantation. NONE of these native trees were planted, they all self-seeded. And, in contrast to Sitka, this is a natural ecosystem that WON'T burn, and WILL be fantastic habitat for 1,000s of native species. Nature knows what to do, if we let it.

We SO need to leave monoculture plantation forestry behind. It usually • Burns like petrol • Drives out nature • Drives out local communities • Drives climate breakdown • Helps kill tourist economies... • Produces crap timber • Is *highly* vulnerable to pests and diseases ENOUGH already.

There's an organic exceptionalism at work: I'm a good consumer because I eat only organic eggs / pasture-fed meat etc. In many cases these have a higher, sometimes MUCH higher, environmental impact. The worst of all farm products are organic beef and lamb. www.theguardian.com/environment/...

Rewilding isn't a side project of the climate fight. It is the fight. This great man makes the case plainly: "the rewilding of the world will suck enormous amounts of carbon from the air and lock it away in expanding wilderness.” That's not a hope, it's an observed pattern across ecosystems.

After a month of drought, outside the forest the ground is dry and cracked. But within, there's still no shortage of water, and in many places footsteps quickly fill. By thoroughly removing natural ecosystems, we have removed the land's ability to regulate its own hydrology, and so much more.
