Y’all. They signed papers in early January and then decided not to come to school before classes started. There’s no world where the conditions under which they signed these papers, decided not to attend school, and get sued for a combined $1 million is anything other than straight up exploitation.

I want us to think carefully about what this lawsuit says about a class of students: that they owe the university their labor, or else. I don’t care what legal standing the university has here, they’re suing students for wanting to go elsewhere and that’s simply deplorable.

Each week, our office of research publishes funding opportunities for scholars across campus. Each week, I scan them for ones relevant to the humanities and social sciences. Most weeks, I fail to find any. This isn’t because there aren’t funding opportunities.
