Morning Dave

I arrive at the shop and the shopkeeper is early again; the papers are brought in and sorted. I feel redundant, I say. We laugh. As I leave a bloke with a flat cap and a walking stick approaches.

Early stroll. I’m framed in the door as I leave. The morning sky hints at possibilities for the afternoon sky. A hole dug in the pavement where I’ve intermittently smelled gas for decades. I bend to tame my left shoelace. An abandoned trampoline frame, unbouncy.

kids have such lovely turns of phrase my granddaughter and her friend call those bales of hay wrapped in white plastic ‘tractor eggs’
