McCarthyism has always been the biggest parallel to our current era of book banning. But now the judiciary, state leges, the executive branch, local governments, and our Congress appear ready to hold pitchforks this time. Call. Write. Vote. Repeat. www.publishersweekly.com/pw/by-topic/...

Damn it. I’m so thankful for the amazing librarians in Arkansas, like Nate and Adam and @neonimpossible.bsky.social who are fighting censorship laws like 372. These bad circuit court rulings hurt. I’m hoping we’ll see a cert petition on this one.

Arkansas Right to Read

We've been quiet for a while, as things were in a holding pattern in the state. Unfortunately, today that ended. Librarians in Arkansas are now beholden to Act 372, one of the worst library laws to ever hit the books. To read today's ruling: www.nwahomepage.com/news/state-n...

It’s not a good sign when a renowned con law professor and author calls your civil case “a bad news counterexample.” 🤦‍♀️😫 Great write up by @tmksyracuse.bsky.social

My new post focuses on 2 library book removal cases, one from the Reagan era, the other from last year. Read together, they signal significant erosion of civil libertarian guardrails in the context of Trump-era democratic backsliding tomkeck.beehiiv.com/p/pico-and-l...

I love these people. Thank you @librarypolicy.bsky.social and @penguinrandomhouse.bsky.social and all of you working so hard here. You’re my heroes! 🙌

ALA Public Policy & Advocacy

ALA staff were proud to join colleagues across libraries, publishing, and education this week on the Hill to remind our elected officials of the importance of the right to read! Thank you to everyone who made their voices heard in Congress - and to everyone who made this possible!

Fantastic interview, y’all! 🫶 This is all too familiar and I’m so glad you can speak up about it, @thenextgenlib.bsky.social

Frank Strong

You won't want to miss my interview with librarian Amanda Hunt (@thenextgenlib.bsky.social), formerly of New Braunfels ISD, home to one of the biggest acts of censorship we've seen at @txfreedomread.bsky.social. Amanda had a lot to say! franklinstrong.substack.com/p/an-intervi...

Reminder that Comstock was used to enforce book censorship. Gee, I wonder if they intend to do that again? Write. Call. Vote. Repeat. NO to Blanche and all 4 book censorship bills making their way in Congress (H2616, S4925, H8705, H7661). recordsofrights.org/events/45/the-comstock-act

The Comstock Act, 1873 | Records of RightsAmong the many items banned from the mails by the 1873 Comstock law were books on anatomy, works by D. H. Lawrence, information about contraception, and photographs of boxing matches. Anthony Comstock, a self-appointed guardian of public morality, boasted that in his lifetime he seized 150 tons of books, made 4,000 arrests, and drove 15 people to suicide. Anthony Comstock successfully lobbied Congress for stricter obscenity laws, and secured an appointment as a special agent to the United States Postal Service with broad powers to police the mails. The law did not define obscenity—Comstock did. He often barred jurors from seeing the item in question, saying that it was too vile to show them.recordsofrights.orgAaron Rupar

Ted Cruz is the latest of a string of Republican senators to push an agreeing Blanche to ban the mailing of mifepristone. They're coming for abortion pills next.

Do this!! It’s as easy as it gets.

American Library Association

NEW: A federal book banning bill has been introduced in the Senate. It's time to make our voices heard. Tell your Senators to REJECT pro-censorship legislation like S. 4925 that would limit the freedom to read! We need every advocate to speak out against censorship: action.ala.org/campaign/S4925

Thankfully this story ends on a high note: AISD is retaining all of its full-time librarian positions after all. You know why? It’s due to a great deal of advocacy work. Kudos @freadomfighters.bsky.social and all who played a part in this. What a win! www.kxan.com/news/local/a...

The killer was the #txlege, in the school library, with the purse strings. What a terrible update this is. I’m saddened for AISD students, and hope to see some LOUD, angry parents, students, school board members, and librarians speaking out about this. austincurrent.org/2026/05/29/a...
