Tempelhof was first turned into an airfield around WWII, as was Billy Bishop. Tempelhof is now a 300ha park.

This is the real reason. There is no business case for commercial jets at Billy Bishop because the infrastructure around the airport can’t handle the traffic of people. But the infrastructure *can* handle it if each jet flying from there holds just a handful of people instead of hundreds.

The best (and imperfect) analogy I can think of is Stanley Park in Vancouver, which is shaped in such a way that you can enter from the downtown peninsula and walk a single direction in a loop (the Seawall), end up roughly where you started from, and be able to do that in about day.

For others, natural breakwater islands exist, but they are shaped in such a way that make circular loops with the mainland impossible (eg. Boston).

Most shoreline/coastal cities don’t have natural breakwaters like this (eg. LA, Chicago). For the shoreline/coastal cities that do, the size of the breakwaters are at scales either too small or too large for an urban park.

It’s hard to stress how unique Toronto’s islands are. I can’t think of a single major city in the world that has an island chain wrapping around its downtown core like this…

Don’t want to do the full circle? Take the ferry back to the Layton terminal and head towards Union Station.

Imagine: taking the RapidTO Bathurst streetcar to the lake, hop over to Billy Bishop, taking an island Bikeshare all the way to the Eastern gap, walking through Biidaasige, Bikeshare west across Queens Quay back to Bathurst, and grabbing a streetcar back up to Line 2.

Dozens of cities including Chicago, Berlin, and Hong Kong eliminated their downtown and waterfront airports and either turned them into parks, development, or both. Billy Bishop Park would create a circular loop between Bathurst and the Portlands, transforming Toronto’s waterfront for the better.

As someone who’s used Billy Bishop Airport several times, I have to say this: It would be much better if it were a park.
