An elite group of 900 or so billionaires holds more wealth than 66 million Americans. For perspective, a group of folks that could fit onto one Airbus A380-800 holds more wealth than the *combined* populations of Illinois, Ohio, Georgia, North Carolina, Michigan, and New Jersey.

It would have cost around $15-20 million to continue testing for all 8 major food borne pathogens. Instead, RFK Jr. cut back to two. The reflecting pool renovations have cost (so far) $16.4 million. Would happily exchange a newly-painted reflecting pool for the ability to eat a salad.

To put it in perspective. The $16M spent on the Reflecting Pool is enough to fully fund 8 multi-year RO1 grants - the NIH’s flagship, gold-standard grant. That grant gave us statins, pacemakers, and LASIK (& lots more). It’s not just the waste. It’s the lost opportunity that the waste represents.

If you spent $1 million a day, it would take you 2,739.7 years to spend a trillion dollars. The first trillionaire is not something to applaud. It’s a symptom of a broken system and a serious national security risk.

Was just reminded of this quote by Maya Handa, Zohran Mamdani’s campaign manager. “The only way you do impossible things is by continuing to try to do impossible things.”

Permanently extending the ACA subsidies would cost $350 billion over 10 years. Incandescently angry doesn’t begin to describe it.

“When they go low, we go high” should mean when they commit crimes we hold them accountable. When they come for people we stand in the breech. When they lie we come at them with receipts. Not rolling over or “keeping the peace”. Sometimes being unreasonable is the most reasonable thing you can be.

Yesterday I called a nominee running in a red Ohio district to see if he was interested in being considered for Blue Ohio funding. He paused and said yeah- I’ve not raised much because times are so hard and my neighbors need to eat and I don’t want someone to go without because they gave me $25.

The ‘24 TN voter turnout was 58%. But in the last midterm it was 33%. Elections are won by the people who turn out to vote. In this election, we have to run hard everywhere. 💙

Being reminded by @hcrichardson.bsky.social that Mothers’ Day (plural apostrophe) was part of an effort to “take control of politics from the men who had permitted [the] carnage” of war feels … right. Mothers are soft but strong; loving but fierce. May we bring that energy to the work before us.

“Why don’t you move?” Because being in a blue state doesn’t protect you. Red state legislators have no original ideas - they’re foot soldiers for bigger fish with bigger designs.
