A Christmas Gift for You from Philles Records

Stop Calling Me Frank

You have a month to write a 33 1/3 book about the album of your choice. Which record are you going to write about? (No previously covered albums allowed; new shit must come to light: see below.) (For all books in the series: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/33_1/3) (H/t @monostich.bsky.social

Today’s entertainment. I was thoroughly entertained.

Letterboxd/Filmsky Last Four Friday Early Linklater and early Lee — both of them playful and philosophical — flanking De Palma at his most devastating. #LastFourWatched

Meant to post this when it went live this afternoon, but the Buck Moon is still up, so here's this month's Full Moon Feature, better late than never. Now I get to find out if there any fervent SLEEPWALKERS defenders out there.

Full Moon Features: Sleepwalkers (1992)One of the marketing hooks for 1992’s Sleepwalkers was that it was the first time Stephen King had written something directly for the screen. His previous screenplay credits — Creepshow…werewolf-news.com

Seated for De Palma’s CASUALTIES OF WAR at the Alamo and they just played the videos for XTC’s “The Mayor of Simpleton” and Kate Bush’s “The Sensual World” back to back. So this screening is off to a good start.

One could say I've been obsessed with Brian De Palma ever since I stumbled onto BLOW OUT on cable back when I was too young to fully understand what I was watching. Now I've come full circle by writing about his film OBSESSION, which turns 50 this week, for @crooked-marquee.bsky.social.

There’s More to De Palma’s Obsession Than Mere Hitchcockery — Crooked MarqueeBrian De Palma took inspiration from Alfred Hitchcock for his 1976 romantic thriller, but he more than made it his own.crookedmarquee.com

I always find it curious when the credits for Japanese films are only partially translated. We find out who does the main behind-the-scenes jobs and the names of the primary actors, but when it comes to everybody else, it's like screw those people.

Today would have been David Warner's 85th birthday. Here's what I wrote for his 80th detailing why he should have been knighted. crookedmarquee.com/david-warner...

I’ve owned all three editions of Paul Schrader’s MISHIMA: A LIFE IN FOUR CHAPTERS that Criterion has released. Started with the DVD, then got the Blu-ray, and finally the 4K. Each time, the upgrade has always been worth it because this remains the best-looking package they’ve ever put out.

It's nice out and I took the day off (the whole week, in fact), so naturally I have determined the thing to do with it is watch all four-and-a-half hours of Masaki Kobayashi's TOKYO TRIAL on the @criterionchannl.bsky.social.

Evangelist Whitney Lynn says she preaches on planes because she loves “a captive audience.” She's not alone. It's becoming a trend. If spreading your message requires listeners who can't escape, maybe it's not as compelling as you think. www.friendlyatheist.com/p/christian-...

Just finished watching MEGADOC, Mike Figgis’s documentary about the making of MEGALOPOLIS, and knowing that in 2003 Ryan Gosling was cast in the role eventually played by Shia LaBeouf is staggering.

Spent the morning writing a five-paragraph takedown of Stephen King's SLEEPWALKERS, so you have that to look forward to on Wednesday.
