I'm only 37 and I saw that world. I work roughly the same job that my dad did when he was my age (data analyst). He worked for a regional telco (unionized). He could afford a house, 3 kids, 2 cars, and a wife who worked 8hrs/week at a library. My gf and I combined barely afford rent comfortably.

I mean, there is an argument that the US has had draconian policies like this since inception (and be correct). But these specific instances are much more narrowed down to the modern policies we have instituted.

It's the inevitable conclusion of the last 25 years of US domestic policy and ~5 decades of "criminal justice" War on Drugs, 94 Crime Bill, USA PATRIOT, etc all paved the road to this. All of this stuff has been happening to a lesser degree for the last 50 years or longer
