Topper Tuesday (“Short Stories,” topper to “The Bungle Family”):

Singer Helen Kane, who helped inspire Betty Boop, was born on August 4, 1904. Kane didn't voice Betty, but she sued the cartoon's studio, feeling the caricature infringed on her. Later in life, she signed Betty Boop photos as some assumed she voiced her.

Charles Schulz took a big step toward desegregating the comics page when Franklin first appeared in "Peanuts" on July 31, 1968. Here’s that initial sequence.

But he still hates Mondays.

"Betty Brown, Ph.G." by Boody Rogers, originally published on November 21, 1938, and titled "A Shaky Future."

Betty Brown first appeared in "Bob Steele, Ph.G." on July 30, 1934. In these first four strips featuring Betty (from July 30 and August 6, 13, and 20), you can see Zack Mosley writing Bob out, and it would soon be retitled “Betty Brown, Ph.G.” (The Black character is a relic of that era, apologies.)
