Kid1 has figured out that getting an actual recipe with silly things like amounts or timings from my mother is a lost cause. So their vacation project is being sous-chef to grandma and writing down something that resembles a recipe. Love seeing it.

I set my Out of Office for 2-3 days *before* I leave and 2-3 after I return. The first handles expectation of getting a response to emails that may come in just before I’m actually out of office. Second, handles problem you noted.

Depending on age of family, science world is fun. Also, the little False Creek ferries between Granville and Science World. For events and other stuff about Vancouver check out @miss604.com

Depends on what you like. Lots of great hikes (including Lynn Canyon which has a suspension bridge that is less touristy and free). Out at UBC there is the Botanical Garden, Museum of Anthropology (amazing) and the blue whale skeleton at the biodiversity museum. Granville Island is a standard.

Unrefrigerated milk in a box and eggs are definitely two things that took some getting used to in Europe.

I remember once in high school hosting another high schooler for a week. He was from the south (want to say Kentucky?) Saw our milk and in the thickest southern drawl you can imagine says “Y’all have milk in a bag?” Never knew it was not the norm until then.

I think what you’re saying about digital spaces and community is what I was also getting at a bit. “Home” can be about the people and not any particular physical space. If the people are there then it is home.

“Meep meep” Just added this to my life list. Not the first one I’ve ever seen but first since I started tracking. Also, the cartoons lied. Was not prepared for how small these things are in real life.
