Housing, poverty, social policy, cats | Housing policy at Independent Age

I can tell you exactly what politicised me - working on the social care white paper in 2009-10 when the cross-party talks on funding were torpedoed, and having to walk past this poster every day on the way to the office. I'm still furious, I expect Andy Burnham is too.

Yes it is absurd to think rough sleeping isn’t hugely publicly salient, right across the political spectrum

Luke Tryl

Seen a few people saying rough sleeping policy isn’t aimed at median public concern. Quite apart from any policy/moral imperative it really is - rough sleeping comes up time again in focus groups as one of the most visible signs of Broken Britain and community decline!

Significantly relieving rough sleeping numbers (“no second night out” style) should be achievable. The real challenges are upstream, tackling the factors that drive people into rough sleeping in the first place

Adam Bienkov

Ending rough sleeping should be perfectly achievable if Burnham has the will to achieve it. Official figures suggest there are fewer than 5,000 people sleeping rough on a typical night across England. A problem that one of the richest countries in the world really should be able to fix

Football question from my son: why is stoppage time added to the end of 90mins rather than pausing the clock during the game? (I have no idea)

Is it kitten-o-clock? I think it must be kitten-o-clock.

I have a lot of affection for Rail magazine after it became my toddler’s magazine of choice (ahead of the more obvious options like CBeebies). Now have high hopes this signals @jim.londoncentric.media levels of future success

Jim Waterson

Does anyone on British Bluesky* have a copy of Rail magazine’s 24 June print edition, cover story “Give us some space say charter owners”, they licensed one of London Centric’s pieces and I missed my chance to buy it. *pretty confident, ngl

Delighted to work with Crisis and other orgs across the housing and homelessness world on this report demonstrating the urgent need to unfreeze LHA www.crisis.org.uk/media/00pnzl...

www.crisis.org.ukCrisis

For too long, housing benefit has not kept pace with soaring rents. This is driving record numbers of people into homelessness as they're priced out of their homes. The government must unfreeze housing benefit urgently so it covers the true cost of renting. Everyone needs a home.

Another outstanding investigation from @jim.londoncentric.media making a compelling case for proper statutory regulation of letting agents

Jim Waterson

Want to run a fake London estate agency and repeatedly scam people out of thousands of pounds through rental scams? The good news is that for £250 you can join all the official renters' protection schemes and do it with a UK government badge of approval! www.londoncentric.media/p/london-ren...

Very stressful dream last night: Andy Burnham appointed me Chancellor of the Exchequer. Most of dream was trying to get Ed Miliband to stop sulking and offer me some advice
