I think this is a case where it was probably based on it unofficially but "Best of the Best" is just a vague/common enough expression that you can use it without needing to license it (though the movie company would maybe have a case if they wanted to make a legal claim).

I was too young for Robotech but I remember Voltron, and it was just pegged as another cartoon, not particularly foreign or anything

I'd almost believe the movie was named after the game but evaded notice by being both French and based on a game that was pretty old by that point

it's one of those extremely weird cases where some executive made a baffling decision. I'd certainly never heard of the movie before. LJN had a deal to get Jaws and maybe that somehow made it into the mix. We'll never know unless we can somehow track down the staff from back then.

One game I originally included in Now Playing was Hot Dog, which Japanese sources point to being based on a movie about skiing. But "hot dog" is also a general skiing term, and there was nothing official tying them together, I ended up cutting it out

The title screen references Universal, so it's absolutely related to the movie

while not Japanese/anime, I did work at a movie theater when Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon came out, and there was a noticeable amount of people who were pissed off they had to read subtitles in a movie. The idea that media could exist in other languages was incomprehensible for typical Americans

Best of the Best I didn't include, so I'm going to say "no". But Gotcha I did include and it definitely is because there's a licensing note on the title screen

based off the quotes and replies, this seems dependent on where you lived and how old you were. I was in high school and college when I got into anime, and by that point most people at the same age don't care unless you get publicly weird about, it like wearing hentai shirts or whatever

This was kinda true for me but it was more felt through parents/the media. Most of my peers in high school thought it was weird but you could also convince a few of them to get hardcore into Eva or DBZ
