This silver Medal from the 'Medical College for Women Edinburgh' awarded for Botany during the session of 1892, was awarded to A. Mary C. Geddes during her medical studies in Edinburgh in the 1890s.

As knowledge of asepsis increased, the design of instruments changed to allow easy sterilisation. Metal boxes that could be cleaned properly also replaced the wooden, velvet-lined boxes of the 19th century. Surgeons still sterilised and re-used needles between procedures.

These plates and screw nails were removed from a patient who had sustained a fracture to their tibia 50 years prior. They were taken out because an abscess cavity had developed which contained these plates and screws that had become loose.

This letter opener is reportedly made from wood taken from serial killer William Hare's house. It has the inscription: "made from wood from Hare's house who murdered "Daft Jamie" in West Port of Edinburgh 1828. Burke hanged in January 1829".

Before the introduction of the National Health Service in 1948, local hospitals were funded by subscriptions and voluntary contributions from individuals and local organisations. In 1922, the Abertillery & District Hospital Linen League was set up by local women to offer their help to the hospital.

They would've been there the same as my family!

My great-great-grandmother and her family were in Merthyr Workhouse. Her son was one of many people who used the workhouse strategically for medical care. I admire that.
