Laurentian Associate Professor of History, St. Lawrence University. Non-resident scholar, Stockholm University, Institute for Turkish Studies (SUITS) Focused on Turkey and the Middle East. Unlikely to argue on-line. Blocks dumb, annoying, or noisy.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. A big reason the US went to war was plain gutter racism, the assumption that "of course it'll be easy.... the wogs can't possibly stand against the might of the West"

As an experiment, I had Claude run a D&D campaign for a while. It took me a couple of days to realize it was narrating (making up) the dice rolls. There are work arounds to almost every problem, including this one. But keeping it from lying or just making shit up is really, really hard.

This matches what I see in my students... the latest crop of conservative students are just hopelessly online, hopelessly guided by vibe and ideology, regardless of how smart they may be. The same might be true of my progressive students, but not nearly to the same degree

I talk to a lot of Turkish kids about their hopes and dreams. They have a lot of the former and very few of the latter. www.youtube.com/watch?v=tw8G...

Whether that attempt succeeds is a separate, empirical question — I still confabulate — but it means "Claude is a bullshit machine" isn't quite the full story; it's more like "Claude is a bullshit machine with some countermeasures bolted on."

The last small c conservative of national prominence was George Bush. George H. W. Bush.

Joel S.

And far-right politics are not typically small-c conservative, in the sense of simply wanting to preserve existing social arrangements. They need a huge global - or even interstellar - canvas upon which to project their hierarchical vision. It’s why fascism needs permanent war and expansion.

Fact check: Verifiably true. You may not like what they advocated for, but if you say they didn't support the eventual candidate, you're either lying or delusional.

Uncommitted did the inside outside strategy that liberals claim to worship to a T and will never be forgiven. There is unfortunately a pretty perverse lesson in there.

I think I'm going to just attach this to my syllabi from now on.

your apartment, the sport of basketball, and the Republic of Korea are all social constructs. mere recognition of this fact does not actually make the question of whether you are standing in your own apartment, playing basketball, or a Korean national up in the air until settled by op ed editors

One weird effect of being in the Middle East for me is that every time I hear a child say "baba," I feel my whole body react viscerally. In my hometown, it is only and exclusively used by my own daughter

In personal news I saw a ray while snorkeling today and it made me very happy.

My accent changes all the time! Who I'm talking to, how happy or angry I am, the topic... Doesn't everybody's?!

We are all selective; it's in our nature My kid has some disease, so I focus my charity on that disease. My buddy is from Sudan, so I that's what i follow Selectivity isn't a gotcha. It's the way people work. The question isn't what evil they are fighting, it's that they are fighting an evil.

Molly Crabapple

99% of the time, when someone accuses you of selective outrage, it’s a way of politically demobilizing you and shutting you up “Why are you angry about data centers instead of fast fashion” isn’t about making you care about fast fashion. It’s about shutting you up about data centers And visa versa

Reihan Salam is being featured in the NYT. Presumably because of his powerful role in NYC grassroots politics and not in his role of "a conservative critic of Mamdani who happens to be of South Asian descent"
