19 June 1828: newspapers carry a report from Lyme Regis, noting several ichthyosaurs in Mary Anning's shop, her discovery of a large ammonite and some coprolitic news. She often featured in newspaper reports, written probably by her friend George Roberts who seems to have handled her PR.

Annual pilgrimage to say hello to Mary Anning. Her Purbeck stone gravestone looking more licheny and mossy now (it was cleaned in 2017). The stone was recut several times during the 20th century so we don’t know for sure what it originally said.

As it's the Lyme Regis Fossil Festival this weekend, today's #FossilFriday just has to be Mary Anning's famous ichthyosaur, found by Mary and her brother in 1811 and 1812. First illustrated in 1814 and many, many times since, it's an icon of early 19th century vertebrate palaeontology.

Happy World Oceans Day! When our federal government repeatedly steps on rakes around ocean policy, it can be easy to get discouraged. But there's still so much we can do in the meantime! (P.S. this is part of an upcoming collab with Philly artist Sam Heimer)

Happy Birthday Mary Anning 🦑 A pioneer. Without formal education. From working class background. Becoming breadwinner at a young age. Reshaped how we see the world. Now, globally recognised as the lady that started it all. Thank you, Mary, you're an inspiration.

21 May 1799, Lyme Regis: birth of palaeontologist Mary Anning, the fifth of the nine children of Richard and Mary Anning. By 1821 newspapers describe her as ‘this persevering and successful collector of extraneous fossils’ and from the mid-1820s, she is Lyme's biggest tourist attraction.

It's #InternationalMuseumsDay, so here's my favourite museum, the brilliant little Lyme Regis Museum, completed in 1901 by Thomas Philpot, great-nephew of Elizabeth Philpot. Occupying 2 sides of Cockmoile Square, the wing with the arched windows is built on the site of Mary Anning's house 1809–26.

In case you think losing 95k scientists in a year is normal, it's decidedly not.

This is the most astonishing graph of what the Trump regime has done to US science. They have destroyed the federal science workforce across the board. The negative impacts on Americans will be felt for generations, and the US might never be the same again. www.nature.com/immersive/d4...
