If you wish to see the tears I shed for Infantino you will have to look very very very very hard … and you will still not find them.

There *really* should be consequences for this.

They lied about the whole thing and now admit the contractor screwed up the Reflecting Pool installation. And because they were in a rush to indict to please Trump, they presented false evidence to a grand jury. meidasnews.com/news/doj-see...

This is an extreme cautionary story. Writers today are expected to affirm they did not use AI in ‘creating’ their work. If fingerprints and tools demonstrate this is not so, or even raise questions, it can end or ruin a career, because of the legal issues. deadline.com/2026/07/ai-q...

I continue to try to find real positives in so much of The Discourse being about Homer, but I confess it is getting harder. Mainly because of, well, the nature of the discourse.

Very seriously, through the years my best ‘marketing department’ has always been booksellers. This was spotted in a Vancouver bookstore by a friend.

The splendid rockstar librarian @nancybooklustpearl.bsky.social has a rule of 50. Give a book 50 pages, bail if it isn’t working for you. (She even reduces the ‘50’ by a page for every year YOU are over 50!) We’ve debated, happily, about this, I should add.

This may sound foolish, but if it resonates with even one person it's worth it. I used to love reading. Then life and a lack of time got in the way. Recently it dawned on me that I don't have to finish books. A quick yes/no after 25-30 pages. Continue only the ones I'm loving. I'm reading again.

Someone, maybe Housman, said a poet is someone who has been in a field and was struck by lightning, and a great one has had it happen a few times. Archibald MacLeish was not a ‘great’ poet, but this is a poem I greatly admire. Deeply moving. www.theatlantic.com/magazine/arc...

Whenever one is inclined to any positive thoughts about Rand Paul, say for not truckling to Trump on something, his viciousness here needs to be thought about. The memory-holing of Covid’s deaths, and the living who still suffer from it, and those who mourn losses, remains an utter disgrace.

Aaron Rupar

a statement from Fauci's lawyers says Rand Paul has "an intense & seemingly pathological course of retribution, revenge, & obsession with Dr. Fauci ... The accusations that Chairman Paul continues to propagate are false and disgraceful, and we will examine all options to hold him accountable."

The game of ‘who is the worst Trump acolyte/enabler’ is a sordid one. But so is Todd Blanche.

Eric Columbus

We all laughed at Blanche when he said they had done an actual investigation into Comey. Turns out he was right — and the investigation was at once comical, sordid, and bone-chilling. A would-be Pinochet runs up against the structural limits of a still-free country.

I wince to imagine what @audacityofdespair.bsky.social could do with this gratuitous deployment of a mother.

I'm obviously not paying to read anything on FP, so maybe the article circles back artfully,* but whew, the non sequitur with which it opens ... * it almost certainly does not

I made a Pink Gin in honour of the not entirely honourable Ian Fleming, after reading his daily routine in Jamaica here early today. I continue to feel they are more gold-orange than pink, and that ‘Gin and Bitters’, the other name for them, is less evocative but more accurate.
