Elena Cornaro Piscopia (d. #OTD 1684) was the first woman to receive an academic PhD--a doctorate in #Philosophy, U. of Padua (Italy) on 25 June 1678. She originally applied for a doctorate in Theology. Church authorities refused as women were not permitted to teach or preach #theology. #HigherEd
