Imagine having played with Muddy Waters, Howlin‘ Wolf, Junior Wells and Sonny Boy Williamson, being friends with BB King, influencing and inspiring Jimi Hendrix, making a comeback on the same label as The Stone Roses, and *still* be playing gigs at 90. What a bluesman!

Quite! I mean, even if you dismiss pretty much all evidence that suggests caution, it’s not going to have a positive effect, is it?

BTW, when I say ‘clever’ or ‘non-clever’ people, I don’t mean people who are smart or not, but people who are perceived and/or held up to us as clever, or as specialists or experts, as opposed to people perceived either as normal punters like you or me, or else populist champions of normal punters.

It’s basically a combination of motivated reasoning/excuse-making and taking the line of least resistance mentally, but, I think, enhanced greatly by projecting one’s own internal upset or damaged pride at not being able to understand onto the ideas/reality and the people explaining/proposing them.

I think this is particularly evident when a) an idea takes more than 1 or 2 stages of thought to understand; b) it’s put forward by purportedly clever people; c) it has personally inconvenient conclusions; and d) simpler 1/2-stage explanations or solutions are provided (often by non-clever people).

Quite! I think there is something in many humans (and I experienced this too) that means that when we have trouble understanding something we get angry and frustrated *with the thing or people* we can’t understand, and seem to dismiss, ignore, or oppose it, or just look for simpler alternatives.

Aggregate that across societies at the most frustratingly complex point in human history, and where bad, simplist, anti-science, anti-complexity, aggressive/hateful populist choices are offered and easy to make but have devastating consequences, and the 2020s so far start to make a bit more sense.

Many have had a much worse time, but many, many more have, I suspect, suffered very small reductions in cognitive ability of a point or two that they and their similarly constrained friends, family and colleagues have not even noticed themselves.

I’d estimate that I’ve lost about 10-15 IQ points (or whatever is an equivalent but better and non-biased measure) now and perhaps double that for several years, along with an huge loss in attention, patience, memory, ability to understand complex or non-linear things, and increased frustration.

I’d go even further. I’d contend that Covid had a negative impact, ranging from unnoticeable to profound, on the cognitive abilities of hundreds of millions, & potentially billions, of people. In a world whose functioning & tech is already at the limits of most people’s understanding, that’s huge.

There’s no way >100 FAs will vote against their own (and Infantino’s) enlarged meal ticket.
